Health Information in British Sign Language

Several statutory agencies have produced accessible information for
Deaf sign language users:
•Health Rights Information Scotland has produced British Sign
Language versions of their leaflets “
o The NHS and You,
o Making a complaint about the NHS,
o Confidentiality “ Its your right, and
o How to see your health records.

•Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) now has
BSL versions of the following patient guidelines on DVD:
o Acute coronary syndromes,
o Arrhythmias,
o Chronic heart failure,
o Dementia,
o Epilepsy in children and young people,
o Lung cancer,
o Stable angina, and
o Prevention of cardiovascular disease.
You may also know that the Scottish Consumer Council and NHS
Education for Scotland have put together the website œPolish Information
Plus. This website lets people find information about public services in
Scotland which has been translated into Polish. There are over 200 pieces of information on this website. The Scottish Government provided the financial resources to do this.

SCoD is aware that some National Council member organisations have
produced health information that is available either on their website or on CD/DVD. SCoD is in the process of trying to find out what health information has been produced in Scotland for Deaf sign language users.
We would like to know what your organisation has produced, when it was produced, and what your organisation/service users think are the gaps in the available information. Once this information is gathered, SCoD will write a report which will be submitted to NHS Scotland and the Scottish Consumer Council. The report will also be available on the SCoD website. (See below for direct link)
The April bulletin is available now on the same link.
